The School Board is voting tonight on the 2011-12 budget, which currently includes a 3% increase in compensation (2.5% bonus and a .5% raise) for all school employees. How is this possible? The combined efforts of your education association at the national, state and local levels, including: 1) A vast majority of the funding for the additional compensation will come from the Federal Education Jobs Act, which was passed with the support of over 300,000 e-mails to Congress from NEA members over the summer. 2)The VBEA has been advocating for a 3% increase in salary since our October Every Member Meeting, attending budget hearings and school board meetings. 3) Recently, VEA members across the state sent thousands of e-mails and made hundreds of phone calls to members of the state legislature, leading to increased funding for public education at the state level beyond the Governor's proposed budget. The VBEA would like to thank the administration for proposing the 3% increase in compensation in spite of pressure from City Council.
